Zuiko Redding, Resident Teacher, Cedar Rapids Zen Center
Sheila the Zen Dog encourages us -- Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike -- to find peace through letting go of attachments and learning to be in the moment. Often dubbed The Middle Path, Buddhism as explained by this Zen Dog offers guidance to anyone, regardless of breed.. Whether pondering the merits of barking versus receiving tummy rubs, considering the similarities between police dogs and show dogs, or sharing secrets of doggie dreams, Sheila uses her natural dog wisdom, haiku poetry, and simple explanations to fetch and deliver a clear and useful summary of Zen Buddhist teachings
S. A. S. said Zen to live by. You don't have to be a "dog person" to love this book -- nor do you have to be religious or even Spiritual. Zen Unleashed introduces the basic principles and practices of zen in a very simple, friendly, undemanding way -- rather like a good dog ambling along on a walk with you, stopping where it gets interesting and allowing you to slow down, take in the scenery, and really look at what's going on. A perfect book to read in small doses, but so well written you'll want to devour it in a single gulp.. "Simply a delight!" according to Huan. Lucy (a neighbor's dog): "This book is awesome. I'm going to try to get Brad to live more like me. Thanks!"I finished this book by Tim and Sheila the Zen Dog in one sitting er not sitting as in zazen Anyway, it was a quick read! I loved it. In fact, I bought all copies, available at the time, and gave to family and friends. As you can see from the above, even Lucy, a Chicaaago dog (of sort) liked it, too!Tim's delightful -- and often LOL -- snippets weave fundamental Buddhist ideas with practical, common, everyday situations into an authentic and beautiful tapestry to enjoy over and over. I am really enjoying this simple yet profound book. I am really enjoying this simple yet profound book. I have it on my desk so that I can read each chapter, which is very short and written in simple diction, to reflect upon my desk, and to stay focused on life's true meaning and beauty. My daughter saw it and now wants a copy as well, so I guess I'll be ordering a new copy!
