Klawans, a Chicago neurologist and author of three novels, has produced a compulsively readable, enlightening probe of what can go wrong with the brain and how medical science copes. From Publishers Weekly A surgeon's memory goes blank during an operation and he can't remember whether he removed a gallbladder; a woman has mind-splitting headaches whenever she has an orgasm; a Nazi concentration-camp survivor who drags his legs in an odd, circular motion has his defective gait traced to his prison diet. Then there are historic, noteworthy or speculative cases: Toscanini, whose stumbling on the podium may have resulted from a momentary halt of blood supply to his brain; women in colonial New England, possibly victims of Huntington's chorea, put to death for witchcraft; basketball center Bill Smonovich whose career was cut short by acromegaly (abnormal enlargement of bodily extremities). "A neurology success account" according to lazy reader. This book is written as though you are a medical resident (without knowing technical terms) and being introduced to patients during rounds. Klawans leads you gently through a discussion of how he makes his diagnosis and what the key the symptoms are in a most fascinating way. When you read him you wish he were your physician. This book appeals both to those who have a background in medicine and those who do not. I have some backgroun, my husband has none and we both found it interesting enough to order all of Klawans' other books after reading it.. "Five Stars" according to Amazon Customer. Even so, those in the medical field will find the stories far from juvenile and quite rich in detail, spiced with references to Klawans' favorite baseball players and musicians. Included in the collection are interesting historical vignettes, including one about the Good Neurological Sleuthing Toscanini's Fumble is a book of a dozen and a half case histories coming from the files of an eminent American neurologist, Harold Klawans.
