Excellent first source for rook ending theory Rook endings provide the most value of any area of study in chess endings - they're the most frequent, and there are many positions where the result of the game depends on concrete knowledge that you've either learned ahead of time or not. I've read both this book (the Everyman Chess edition) and the rook endings section of Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual, and have to say that although labeled a "survival guide", the Emms book covers the basic 1, 2, and 3 pawn rook endi.
