jbpais said What a wonderful surprise!. A friend recommended this book to me - and I am so glad he did. This is a fun, smart, adventurous read. Moving back and forth between the present day and Elizabethan England, the "history" in the book creates a rich and imaginative context for a murder mystery. At the heart of this story is a sonnet steeped in wordplay that holds the clues to an age-old secret - and it all makes for a thrilling and very enjoyable read. Plus with the puzzling and the historical backdrop and the peek into the world of academia, I just kind of felt smart reading it. I loved it. Highly recommended!. Highly satisfying page turner Author Seth Margolis skillfully combines Elizabethan intrigue and wordplay with a 21st century Hitchcockian plot. Instead of a Holy Grail (hello, Dan Brown) the McGuffin here is a long lost Shakespearean sonnet that holds the clue(s) to something VERY DANGEROUS. Untangling the satisfyingly complex plot takes our heroine from Manhattan to London to Washington DC to Westchester County and New England. Murder and skulduggery abound. Margolis does a great job of weaving all of these elements together while unspooling an engrossing story and creating believable and sympathetic characters. In short, The Semper Sonnet is exactly . I loved this novel!! Riveting novel full of twists and turns. Engrossing murder mystery with wonderfully crafted characters in a thrilling plot. I was immediately pulled into the story and was totally engrossed throughout. From beginning to the end I was captivated as Seth Margolis weaves a time-shifting story set in both New York City and Elizabethan England. I highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves a great mystery page-turner.
