This novella explores life following a devastating plague that wipes out most of humanity.

A view if apocalypse from early 1900's perspective Somehow, I missed reading anything by Jack London throughout my school years. Apocalyptic events are my go-to genre with medical causes being my favorite. I was interested to see how an author in 1912 addressed an apocalypse. Surprisingly, it was similar to contemporary authors. One difference is the degradation of the language when formal education is no longer available or a priority. It is a short book compared to some contemporary novels of the same genre.. "I wanted to like it" according to R. Smith. The idea of it was good, but it seems different time periods were all mixed up and jumbled together when the old man spoke. Even though the year 2012 was referenced, dirigibles were referenced as well. The language used attempted to sound intelligent, but instead sounded immature. The way the so called plague killed sounded sterile and boring. And did not inspire the least bit of horror on the part of the reader. I'm not sure when this was written. if it was written very long ago, it would make sense, if it was recently written t. Disappointing, Jargony Brook This novella contains some well written passages and some interesting ideas. Certainly, a plague could occur and knock mankind back to a more primitive state. However, I found myself paging through parts of it where he discussed technical aspects of early 20th century microbiology--or other things of litlle interest to me. I also failed to connect strongly with the characters. So, ultimately, I ended up scanning a fair amount near the end and this was not worth the read. Your mileage may very.
