Not only do they heighten the impact of Fussell’s remarkable critical interpretation, they help us fully grasp the true scope of this aptly named and catastrophic war. . Paul Fussell’s award-winning landmark study of World War I, originally published in 1975, remains as original and gripping today as ever—but now, for the first time, his literary and illuminating account comes in a beautifully illustrated edition.World War I changed a generation, ushered in the modern era, and revolutionized how we see the world. By drawing from a variety of primary sources—including personal correspondence, newspapers, and literary works—Fussell brings the period alive. Not only does he give us a more profound understanding of what the Great War meant to the people who lived through it, he also analyzes our modern perception of its impact. The wide selection of rare and fascinating images (approximately 160 of them) includes photographs, illustrations, and maps from period books, magazines, newspapers, advertisements, and other publications

Jeff Walker said Remarkable Intellectual and Social History of WW I. I was enthralled with this volume from early on. I had never read the original 1975 version, but can't imagine an edition without the carefully selected and beautifully reproduced illustrations. I have always believed World War I to be both the singularly most important event of modern times and at the same time the most underrated, under-studied and under-appreciated major event of modern times. This is a very powerful, beautifully researched and written intellectual/social history of the impact of this war on the way we see the world, t. Still Reverberating Our view of the world is shaped tremendously by our memory of The Great War.Fussell's masterful book is both scholarly and emotion-packed. If you care about war and its effects on our identity, you must read this. The new illustrated version adds much more depth to an already powerful book.. A great piece of historical writing Alex Lee This book does not need to be reviewed by me! It is a great classic, and it was from its first publication date in the 1970's. I read it back then and remember it with pleasure and admiration after all this time. It reads as easily as a novel, in part because Fussell just writes so well, and in part because he has such a lively and original mind. It has not staled in all these years, indeed, it is as fresh and thought provoking as ever.
