The easy way in to this classic I've tried reading this European masterpiece before, in translation. But while the architecture of the work was amazing, line by line it was often a hard slog. By creating a beautifully poised rendering in English with the allusions decoded in the text itself, Clive James has finally made this masterwork readable for me, while creating a new thing of great beauty, pleasurable in itself.. Brilliant Clive James' poetic skills in abundance. Structure as close to perfect as it can be - maintained throughout the lengthy work.Importantly for me, the CJ voice is there throughout.. I thought this might be beyond me but Linda Herbison Most of it is fairly easy to read (i am reading it out loud with a group of like minded friends). James has integrated the copious footnotes in other translations into the text for extra clarity but I find I do have to look up many of the references. We meet once a week and I now really look forward to our Friday afternoons. Not only that, I am learning heaps about so many other parts of history. I would recommend it to anyone who has heard of Dante's Divine Comedy but has been daunted by some other translations. But bear in mind this is poetry, not a story so it takes a bit more work but it is so rewarding.
