If you are saying to yourself: "I HAVE to have surgery"---read this first. Michigan Kestrel This book is not a difficult read, but has much important historical and recent information about orthopedic surgery. Two very good orthopedic surgeons had recommended surgery when an MRI showed a full-thickness tear of my rotator cuff. I found Dr. Harris' website, which led me to this book. The information gave me the courage to forestall the operation and pursue non-surgical management, which has been successful. I am very grateful.. Excellent explanations I am an avid Dr. John Sarno belieber and this guy reminds me of him a lot. Placebo is a very strong thing and can cause people to feel better when really they are not. I was scheduled to have a knee arthroscopic procedure done later this month and I canceled it based on my belief that he is right on the money.. MUST read. M. H. This is a must read for anyone considering orthopedic surgery.
For many complaints and conditions, the benefits from surgery are lower, and the risks higher, than you or your surgeon think. That these claims come from an experienced, practicing orthopedic surgeon who performs many of these operations himself, makes the unsettling argument particularly compelling. In this book you will see how commonly performed operations can be found to be useless or even harmful when properly evaluated. Of course no surgeon is recommending invasive surgery in bad faith, but Ian Harris argues that the evidence for the success for many common operations, including knee arthroscopies, back fusion or cardiac stenting, become current accepted practice without full examination of the evidence.
