My 7 year old started collecting rocks when stopped at each state sign. He noticed how different they were and wanted to know why. They cover a lot of information but may not go into enough depth for older kids. They have great illustrations and are easy to read. We camp a lot and we keep the whole set in the camper. There are blank pages at the end for kids to write their "observations" down.. Great info, poor illustration I checked this book out of the library. It is a good introduction to the subject. It details some of the most common types of rocks a young rock-hound may find, and provides fun facts and helpful tips. My main problem with the book is that all the pictures are drawings rather than photos, which makes identification difficult.
