A linguistic genius in the middle of America's founding Besides his family, Noah Webster had two major interests in life – the English language and the future of the American government. Harlow Unger does a nice job at explaining both, though he is much stronger at Webster’s linguistic side. This book provides a wealth of information about Webster’s work on American English. From his work on the first American speller to the culminating work of the dictionary, these sections of the book are mesmerizing for anyone interested in the history of American English. I became aware of Webster's importance from references to him in other books on the Founding Fathers.
