When Hannah becomes deathly ill and her parents refuse medical treatment, María desperately tries to save her friend. In this story of magical realism, María knows her best friend, Hannah, is sick, knows something is terribly wrong, but only takes action after a mysterious old woman gives her some strange, very pretty beads. Adults won’t intercede, so she turns to the magic beads, but they can’t do it alone. María must find and use her own inner strength, passed down to her through her ancestral Huichol culture or watch Hannah die.

A Young Adult Book for Grown Ups! Linda Loveland Reid This is a powerful story with a great message. I was caught up in the drama and enjoyed the journey to the exciting conclusion. li is well written with riviting characters. it is a YA genre but any adult will love this book and probably shed a few tears like I did.. This novel is a powerful read Maria's Beads takes a tender subjects, medical ethics, and creates a wonderful novel of friendship and empowerment. While the novel doesn't shy away from exposing adults behaving badly, it is ultimately a page turning mystery that offers hope and redemption. This is a powerful read, and is highly recommended for kids of all ages!. Heartwarming Sarah N Hill I couldn't put this book down. I felt like I was right there with Maria fighting the whole time. I was frustrated with her, anxious with her, and elated with her. I felt a closeness to her family and friends as well. My emotions were definately invested in this story. Very well done!
