MacLaren takes you through every aspect of surfing with wit and humor. I read it cover to cover, then went out and bought a 9 foot longboard (as suggested) and hit the beach. Within the first hour in the water I was standing up and riding waves in, without shelling out alot of cash for less. "Its alllllll about the pop-up." according to Lisaannevictoria. Obviously the only way to learn how to actually surf is to get in the water and do it, with some lessons, or the gumption to just go for it.
