"The return of an old friend" according to Patrick S. Dorazio. I have read all of the Garrett books as well as the Black Company series. Glen Cook (who I am proud to say went to my Alma Mater) is a writer whose character Garrett pops off the page with snarky wit that has always had me laughing and enjoying his thoroughly fun detective tales in the fantastical environment of Tun Faire. With this being number twelve in the series, reading this novel was like slipping on a comfortable old glove for me. I know the characters, remembering back to the good old days of when each of them were introduced, and enjoyin. "Cook improves, re-focuses series" according to The Mystic Eye Of The Hipster. I once believed that Cook was wrapping up the series in the last novel. With the confinment of Chodo Contague & daughter to the asylum, the series seemed to have run its course.Wrong.Cook was clearing away the old set of villains like they were an old hand of cards. And invigorating the series with fresh new baddies & new assumptions.Garret is now dealing with a city gripped by lightning-fast change, & a new & scurrying hodre of hustlers, sorcerers & corrupt businessmen looking to take advantage of the change. Add some cops who hate his guts, & . Best Yet B. A. Standlee Bringing together themes and events from past Garrett novels, this rousing tale moves the "detective" into position for future changes, while wrapping the background story in a thoroughly enjoyable comedy of errors.I laughed through several chapters, and was still chuckling to the end. If you have enjoyed Garrett in the past, especially Sweet Silver Blues (Garrett Files)and Bitter Gold Hearts (Garrett Files), buy this book. It is especially lighter and less turgid than Cook's last Garrett novel: Whispering Nickel Idols: A Garrett, P.I., Novel.
