Actuarysmith said Awesome Single Reference Book - Great Value. This book is a hardcopy word-for-word reprint of "The Mammoth Book of Chess".(TMBOC)Therefore, go check out the reviews on that book - they apply equally to this book. The reason I gave it 5 stars (besides the fact that it is great) is that this hardcopy edition is actually several dollars cheaper than the paper edition of TMBOC!This book has it all; history, rules, basic mates, lessons in tactics and combinations, positional concepts, endgame principles, overview of virtually every opening, traps, classic games, use of computers, internet resources, etc. etc. etc.I have a few pet peeves regarding the book, but at "such a good price" for. Roo Bookaroo said Good technical overview of the game in Good technical overview of the game in 3/Good technical overview of the game in 3/4 of the book, but the rest of the would-be encyclopedia of negligible interest Roo Bookaroo This book is a strange mixture. It was first published in 1997, with the British title of "The Mammoth Book of Chess". Graham Burgess wanted to justify this title by presenting in three parts a pocket "encyclopedia" of chess for the general public, with the grand ambition to cover all aspects of chess -- play, sociology of chess, history, online chess, etc For this effort the book won him the British Chess Federation Book of the Year Award in 1997.Burgess is an excellent chess writer, precise and elegant. It is always a pleasure to read his prose. However for us, intermediate players in the US, the book reappears with a fresh new title ". of the book, but the rest of the would-be encyclopedia of negligible interest This book is a strange mixture.
