It's a simple tale, but my two boys loved this book so much that it was a standard bedtime book for more than a year. We've come back to it again and again. Much later, we found out about the real Norton (Buster) Bird and it made the story even sweeter. One of their favorite parts was that Buster Bird was back on his route after the big excitement (the fire and the rescue) without taking time off, because that was what he did best (and loved).
