Then one day, under the magical mesquite tree, grown from seed by the hand of the wisher…“Who are you, and why are you here?” I ask. Saw light. Can a garden gnome really come to life to help me save heirloom seeds? My family and I enjoy a back-to-basics lifestyle on a small Arizona homestead—but we’re not alone. The summer air temperatures, though, often exceed 110 degrees. We share our low-desert home with dairy goats, heritage turkeys, wildlife, and native plants. Carol said comfortable tone.. The book, both reader friendly and informative, allowed me to live the vicarious life of my alter ego, the farm girl. I have always wanted to have a more sustainable lifestyle. The author comes across as human as she shares growing pains of getting her dream off the ground. She invites the reader to share her failures and successes and to grow with her as she amends her errors. The author made me believe that I too might achieve this lifestyle, that learning from mistakes is a viable way to achieve success. This is a book that will stick with me because of its simplicity but with a deeper message embedded. Without preach. Maestro said I love the way Miss Hamill describes her animals. Author Donna Hamill has written a charming, informative and creative book full of insights, revelations and surprises. Written in the form of a journal, her description of life on a farm, here passion for heirloom seeds and the witty advice from the Gnome all combine to produce hours of delightful reading. I love the way Miss Hamill describes her animals. She has more ways to talk about her roosters than most authors have about their characters. I loved reading this book and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in natural gardening.. "Donna has created a great book in her description of day to day life" according to Margaret Byrnes. Donna has created a great book in her description of day to day life in trying to plant a garden and make it grow in our hot Phoenix climate. We experience her struggles and accomplishments with her as she gets advice from her funny gnome friend. She also educates us in how she is involved in preserving heirloom seeds. It is a bit nostalgic as well as she talks about recipes and other things from her families southern roots passed down from her grandmother and her mother. It is lighthearted and has some funny parts as well.
