DESCRIPTION:
To his astonishment, his career as a self-made man of letters brings him riches and fame and, in the world at large, he becomes the perfect picture of the honourable English gentlemen.George is irredeemably an outsider, and has no hope of becoming such a picture. George finds safe harbour in the reliability of rules, and grows up to become a solicitor, putting his faith in the insulating value of British justice. Then crisis upsets the uneasy equilibrium of both men’s lives. Growing up in shabby-genteel nineteenth-century Edinburgh, Arthur is saddled with a dad who is a disgrace and a mum he wishes to protect, and is propelled into a life of action. With the pulse of blood in his ears, he begins to fall asleep again.—excerpt from Arthur & Georg
George Is My Hero Bart King Although I'm aware of his reputation, I have never read Julian Barnes before. But I could tell from the beginning of this book that I was in the hands of a master. In ARTHUR AND GEORGE, Barnes writes very convincingly in a Victorian Age style. His book describes the parallel experiences of George Edalji, a methodical Englishman of East Indian descent, and Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes stories, Peer of the Realm, and sportsman. This book is based on a true story of how George's legal predicament evolved into a landmark ca. WGHTS Reader said Julian Barnes is a great, informative writer. Julian Barnes is a great, informative writer. Somehow this book feels more ambitious than it really is. Great descriptions of the two protagonists, their lives and their circumstances leading up to the point when the two intersect. And, then it's just a yawn. This not the Dreyfus the case, though it tries hard to portend to be the British version of it. The build up to the point when the two characters intersect is wonderful, but then it just feels like a letdown; you expect something more dramatic. Barnes' writing, though, is impeccable a. Holly said Glad I read it. While this book has been around for a while, I had never read it and wanted to. With that in mind, I selected this for my book group's April selection. The other people in the group got started earlier than I did and didn't particularly enjoy it. One member even stopped reading part way rather than investing the time to complete it. That had me really, really worried when I picked it up ! Howewer, I enjoyed the book and am glad that I read it.This is the story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (of Sherlock Holmes fame) and George Edalji who grows
Realizing the immense injustice George has suffered, he is shaken out of lethargy and, in Holmesian fashion, sets out to solve the case. The novel's style is smoothly revelatory. Julian Barnes is a gifted writer of enormous accomplishment. --Valerie Ryan. We slowly come to realize that George is half-Indian, that Arthur is the famous Doyle, that the woman he loves, chastely, is not his wife and, sadly, that George will not prevail over the forces ranged against him. Late-Victorian Britain is brought to vivid life in the true story of the intersection of two lives: one an internationally famous author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the other, an obscure country lawyer, George Edalji, son of a Parsi Midlands vicar and a Scottish mother. A real tour de force from masterful author Julian Barnes is Arthur & George, which was short-listed for the 2005 Man Booker Prize. They start out very differently. This case of George's lifts Arthur from the slo
